How the tips deduction works

Your tips are still included in wages. On your return, Schedule 1-A then subtracts qualified tips, up to $25,000, from taxable income. Because it is a deduction, the saving equals the deduction times your marginal rate: $2,400 on $20,000 of tips in the 12% bracket.

It sits alongside the standard deduction, so you don’t need to itemize. Self-employed tip earners (for example, a hairstylist renting a chair) can take it too, limited to their net profit from that work.

Questions people ask

Are tips tax-free in 2026?

For federal income tax, mostly. From 2025 through 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips per return on Schedule 1-A. Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, and to state income tax unless your state adopts a similar rule.

Who qualifies for the no tax on tips deduction?

Workers in occupations that customarily received tips before 2025, as listed by the Treasury (restaurant servers, bartenders, hairstylists, rideshare and delivery drivers, and others). Both W-2 employees and self-employed people qualify, but the tips must be voluntary: mandatory service charges and automatic gratuities do not count.

What are the income limits?

The $25,000 cap falls by $100 for every $1,000 of modified AGI above $150,000, or $300,000 for married couples filing jointly. You need a valid Social Security number, and married couples must file jointly.

Is the cap $25,000 per person or per return?

Per return. A married couple who both earn tips can deduct up to $25,000 combined, not $50,000.

Do I still have to report my tips?

Yes. Only tips that are reported (on your W-2, Form 4137 or a 1099) can be deducted. Unreported cash tips don’t qualify, so reporting them now costs Social Security and Medicare tax but unlocks the larger income-tax deduction.
