Tax bracket calculator
Find your bracket, then see exactly how many of your dollars land in each one and what each slice costs.
Reading the result
The highlighted row is your marginal bracket, the rate your next dollar of ordinary income pays. The big number on the tape is your effective rate: the whole bill divided by total income. The gap between the two is the progressive system at work.
This calculator covers federal income tax on ordinary income only. For payroll tax, capital gains, credits and state tax together, use the full income tax calculator. For the thresholds of every filing status, see the 2026 and 2025 bracket tables, or the interactive explainer.
Questions people ask
What tax bracket am I in?
Take your income, subtract the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household in 2026) or your itemized deductions, and find the result in the bracket table. The calculator does this for you and highlights the row.
How do I calculate my effective tax rate?
Divide your total federal income tax by your total income. This calculator shows it two ways: as a share of gross income and as a share of taxable income.
What is a marginal tax rate calculator for?
It tells you how much of your next dollar goes to federal income tax. Use it to value a raise, overtime, a bonus, or a pre-tax 401(k) or traditional IRA contribution, which saves tax at your marginal rate.
How far am I from the next bracket?
The calculator shows the dollars of taxable income left before the next rate starts. That room is useful when deciding how much of a Roth conversion or capital gain to realise in one year.
