Methodology and sources
Every number on this site is computed in your browser from published tables. Here is what we use and where the estimates stop.
Federal figures
- 2026: IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 (brackets, standard deduction, capital gains thresholds, QBI thresholds).
- 2025: IRS Revenue Procedure 2024-40, as amended by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Public Law 119-21), which raised the 2025 standard deduction to $15,750 / $31,500 / $23,625 and the child tax credit to $2,200.
- Payroll: Social Security wage base from the Social Security Administration ($176,100 for 2025, $184,500 for 2026). Additional Medicare Tax and net investment income tax thresholds from the Internal Revenue Code (not indexed).
- Self-employment tax: Schedule SE method: 92.35% of net profit, 12.4% up to the wage base (reduced by W-2 wages), 2.9% Medicare, 0.9% above the threshold.
How the full calculator works
Total income less pre-tax contributions and half of self-employment tax gives AGI. We subtract the larger of the standard or itemized deduction, the senior deduction (for people 65+, phased out by 6% of MAGI above $75,000 / $150,000), and the QBI deduction for self-employment profit below the threshold. Ordinary income uses the brackets; long-term gains and qualified dividends are stacked on top and taxed at 0/15/20%. The child tax credit reduces tax, with the refundable part capped at $1,700 per child and 15% of earnings over $2,500.
Not included
Earned income tax credit, education credits, the premium tax credit, alternative minimum tax, the new tips and overtime deductions (which depend on employer reporting), itemized-deduction limits for high earners, passive-activity and at-risk rules, and city or county income taxes. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
State figures
State brackets, standard deductions and exemptions are simplified 2026 figures compiled from state revenue department publications and the Tax Foundation’s annual state income tax table. We model the main structure of each state but not every credit or phase-out; each state page notes what is left out. States change their rates often, so check your state’s revenue department before filing.
AI explainer
The “Ask about these numbers” box sends your question and the figures on the page to a language model through Vercel AI Gateway (model: openai/gpt-6-luna) only when you press Ask. It explains the calculator’s numbers; it does not change them, and it can make mistakes.
